What Does His Behavior Mean?

Thanks so much for your feedback, Stormy. The son doesn't know his breeds of chicken, I had to guess on the Buff Orpington, because he doesn't know what they are, but he did say he has some Araucanas or Americaunas, but he doesn't know which ones of his chickens those are, or what color they are. Other hen breeds he said are brown, and I got the impression he meant Rhode Island Reds. What other types of brown hens are there that he might be?

And did you mean your Sebrights are a lot smaller than my Merry Etta whose picture I posted, or smaller than those in the picture you found online that you posted?

The son also claimed all of his chickens at the farm are purebred. He bought them from a farm store as pure breds, with no mixing.

But if that is the case, I don't see how my Boy could have such odd coloration, so vastly different from that of his siblings???? Did you look at Charlie Brown's photo? Do you think he is part Barred Rock? Someone said a Barred Rock mother always produces chicks with bars, but I'm not sure what she meant. That photo of him I posted shows markings that could be considered as barred, I would think? It's this one, in the foreground:

If he got the chickens from the farm store as purebreds, they are hatchery birds and the green egg layers are not ameraucanas or araucanas, but easter eggers. Not that it matters one way or the other except for posterity.

Barred hens always produce barred male offspring... I don't see barring in either chicken in the picture, but I'm also not sure if barring can be subdued by another color. if you search the site for "barring genetics" there are some excellent explanations from people with far more organized information than I.

I just read that leghorn roosters "can be the devil." Is this true? Are leghorn roosters generally meaner than other types?

Speaking of subdued coloring, check out Buttery Blanche's photo, below. Do you see all the blonde speckled spots on her head? I'm nearly certain her Mama was a Buff Orpington, but look how she's mostly White Leghorn looking? That White Leghorn rooster must have had a lot of dominance in his genes! Except when it came to my boy who sure seems to have taken after his Mama's side (if his Papa was, indeed, the White Leghorn):

This is my hen Barbie I don't know what the difference would be in genetics because mine are opposite of yours. and they are a grey marble coloring?

I think he meant maybe that his orginal chicken were pures, that would make since, but the eggs from his flock is obviously mixed.

Interesting about the Bantie! If she is half leghorn, then, do you think it would be safer for my Boy to mate with her, since she's larger than a true Bantie? Or could it still hurt her pretty badly?

I don't think they've hatched any chicks at the son's farm themselves. Only bought them from the farm store, though I do remember the little girl telling me how sad she was when she found a chick in the road that had been killed by a raccoon. So they might have hatched their own, but I think it was a store-bought chick.

I sure don't feel very comfortable with the idea of my babies going there. Too many predators! Coyotes, raccoons, cougars, black bears, hawks, owls, eagles.

But when I advertised trying to find a future no-kill home for my Boy a few weeks ago in a local backyard chicken group, there were no takers.

And I offered my boy free with lifetime food for him provided by me, free. But no one was interested, sadly. I feel really sorry for roosters.

I would really like to see buttery Blanches face and a side profile, does she have feathered feet and legs? from the the angle of the picture she looks like she may have EE in her. interesting. that would explain allot of the colors if he had EEs. yep he had EEs (Ameracanas) Spelling is wrong I know! LOL
