Hi. What does sex linked mean? I thought it had something to do with gender because I posted a picture of my 2 week old golden comet and someone said it was defiantly a pullet because it was sex linked.
Thanks all

Sex Linked means the girls are one color and boys are another due to crossed colors. I.E a black male over a barred female will throw Barred daughters and black sons.

To be precise, the color mutations must be located on the Z sex chromosome, for example: Sex linked Barring, Sex linked chocolate, Sex linked Silver, gold, albinism other none feather color mutations can be used too for example sex linked dermal inhibitor Id,id+

Sex linked birds will also not produce sex linked offspring, as they will be crossbreeds and not breed true to either parent standard... different than auto sexing of the Bielefelder or cream legbar which the offspring will breed true and produce offspring that are also auto sexing at hatch...

In this example... at hatch, the males will be black with a white spot on the head and grow into barred birds, while the females will be solid black at hatch and later in life.

While in theory... buying sex linked or auto sexing birds should give you exactly what you are looking for... these traits are only as good as the person separating and or labeling them... I have seen some mislabeled before. :hmm

Taken from the hatchery website... a description of Golden Comet...

"They are also color sexable as chicks for the first generation which are the chicks you receive. Chicks from the second generation will not be color sexable and will come in multiple colors. As chicks the cockerels are white and the pullets are more brownish red in color. Leg color is mostly yellow but will get some greenish. Hens feathering color varies with brownish feathers and white feathers. Adult rooster feathering color varies from totally white to white with light to dark red feathers on shoulder feathers." :)

So far the known sex-linked genes/mutations found on chickens that affect their phenotype pattern are:

On the b locus: b+(wildtype non barred), B(sex-linked barring), B^Sd(sex-linked dilution), B^Se(sex-linked extreme dilution) and the order of dominance is B^Se>B^Sd>B>b+

On the s locus: s+(wild type sex-linked gold), S(sex-linked Silver), s^al(sex-linked imperfect albinism) and the order of dominance is S>s+>s^al

On the choc locus: Choc+(wildtype non-chocolate), choc(sex-linked chocolate) and the order of dominance is Choc+>choc
