I candled one of my chicken eggs and it looks different than the rest. Today is day 5 for the eggs, could someone tell me what this means ? Does it look fertile or not ? Have you seen eggs like this before ?

Hard to tell, the egg is very porous.

On eggs like that, I just leave them in the incubator until at least week 2 to see if I can see any change. It is very hard to tell until closer to the end when they are like that. One of my chickens lays eggs like that. Frustrating. I like to be able to see the little spider growing early on.... not with hers.

Update: This is how the egg looks on day 15

hi karen, on the first picture there was development however the yolk was in the narrow end of the egg! This is the wrong side for the embrio to be positioned, otherwise it would have looked ok but I am suspecting the original position might lead to complications if it hasn't already.

To me it suspiciously looks like it developed till day 8 and might have given up but it is hard to tell from the picture. Check it again in 2 days to see if it has changed.

I would still leave it. It looks like there is growth.... With porous eggs like that, I give them the benefit of the doubt, until it is obvious, which sometimes is after lockdown. Same with REALLY dark eggs. I used to have chocolate Marans, because I loved the thought of the chocolate colored eggs, but incubating them was a nightmare, because I couldn't tell what was going on, and I NEEDED to know what was going on..... LOL
So we sold them for less stress while incubating. I mean, most were fine and at that time I was on a much smaller scale of hatching, and didn't even matter, but we wanted to be able to see what was going on.
