There is the shallow, obvious meaning and the deeper, spiritual truth.

The obvious meaning is that a gardener who throws his precious dirt across the fence at his neighbor's yard is losing his topsoil. He's throwing it away. He is losing his soil.
The deeper meaning is that when we "dish dirt" or gossip about our neighbor (acquaintances), when we do not uphold their reputation in their absence, when we talk about someone behind their backs, we are losing ground, we are harming the relationship we have with that person. Harm that is not easily healed.
