Some dogs are upset by the noise of a thunderstorm, in which case you can sometime desensitize them by playing a CD of thunderstorm sounds, gradually increasing the volume from very low, to loud, over time depending on how long it takes them to get used to it. You do it in steps, increasing volume only when the current one is not bothering them anymore. Other dogs are sensitive the the actual atmospheric pressure changes that come with storms, and that's where the thunder-shirts can help. I've had one of each, the sound sensitive dog was easier to rehab than the pressure sensitive one, in my case. I had a huge GSD that would knock furniture over in her attempts to hide. We usually had to crate her and that helped also, her crate was always her safe space.
