We have purchased four more ducks for our flock (will be 7 now) I was wondering if the Cayuga, Harlequin, Blue Swedish, and White Crested need to be clipped or pinioned. Our Pekins and rescued blue duck did not. Have attempted to research on line and cannot find a list of sorts that will guide us either way. Thank you to anyone who knows the answer!!

Happy Quaking!!!

The Welsh Harlequin might need to have her wings clipped, mine can actually get airborne for a foot or so.

If you're just worried about them flying away, I don't think any of those breeds can actually fly. The only ones of mine that can get more than an inch or two off the ground are the Welsh Harlequin and the Khaki Campbell. The Swedish and the Cayuga are both much to heavy to do more than hop up an inch or so. My mallards, on the other hand, can clear their 3 1/2 foot fence even with clipped wings. I have to clip only one wing to make them lopsided or they get out.

My Welsh Harlequins can all get airborne, but so far not enough to make it over a fence. Their favorite thing to do in the morning is waddle up to the top of the pasture slope and then "fly" down hill, having apparently figured out that flying downhill works better than flying uphill! It's hilarious. Even my hock walker, Swimmy, can get enough air to "fly" herself out of the water. I'm guessing if any of them COULD really fly, they would do so straight away, because the kale grows just the other side of the fence, and they drool over that endlessly, and go insane when I toss leaves to them....

Thank you for setting me straight. We really appreciate it. If they can fly a foot or so off the ground does that indicate they can fly for distance? I ask because our blue rescue duck can get up to a foot for a minute and then drops, am not sure if that is due to an unknown injury.

They sound so cute! Are the harlequins to heavy to go the distance? I would love to see them flying down hill. We have a jumbo Pekin (Leilani) and he (we thought was going to be a girl hence the name) flaps his wings to get up the hill in order to run after our daughter or the bull dog. We have a story of Leilani accidentally getting on top of the bull dog and letting it know who is boss - The bull dog couldn't shake him off so he ran and now it is a game between the two of them.

I have a bunch of non-Muscovy and non-Mallard ducks and none of them can fly higher than 2'. Maybe send an email to Metzer Farms and ask them, I bet they would know for sure.
