I want to get a few ducks and would like to know what duck is best at mothering and hatching her own eggs. I only have one incubator, and i don't want to commit it to ducks every year. I want a breed of duck that will procreate itself. I know muscovies are good but are there any others? I don't really want to hassle with getting the paperwork for mallards. any thoughts?

i was going to suggest scovies

Muscovies and Mallards are the best broodies/mothers, but you already know that

Welsh Harlequin's are pretty good, better than most Mallard-Deriviative breeds.
Buff's will go broody as well.

Buffs! And Buff Mutts

Next to my scovies my buff was my best broody. I had buff, swedish, cayuga, and magpie at the time. Along with crosses of the breeds added in with a male mallard and a mutt swedish drake.

Of course i havent had much else so I wouldnt know what else to say =/

I just found my 8-month-old Pekin duck on a nest of 15 eggs, including 2 chicken eggs. Her mother was also very broody. I've had Pekins in the past who just dropped their eggs randomly and walked away, so I'm thinking this may not be typical for the breed. Weirder thing is, I bought 10 fertile Cayuga eggs through Craigslist today before realizing she was setting.. YIKES!

Great to hear that buffs are more likely to sit. I've been wanting buffs and some fawn and white runners.
