Hi does anyone know a type of duck that is quiet, small and simple to take care of in a peaceful regular urban area? We wondered if Pekin ducks would be the answer. Please reply

All domestic ducks with the exception of Muscovies have the capability of being quite loud. Calls are small but quite loud. Muscovies are very quiet but Drakes can be rather large

To answered the quiet question... Last year my Pekins were my first alert to anything strange going on in the yard in the middle of the night. They quack so loud they'd wake the dogs who would then run from door to window to door trying to get out to protect the homestead. My neighbors (200 yards down the road) would ask me what the hell was eating my ducks last night... They aren't quiet. If you want quiet you have to get a drake. Pekins are very far from small as well.

If you just want a pet, a drake from any breed will do- they have a quiet "frog like" quack. But if you want males and females and quiet is absolutely nessesary you should go with muscovies as they are quackless.

If you just want quiet-er.. avoid any calls, mallards etc. Maybe try a calm breed? if a bird is less excitable it may quack less.

I have a pekin and I live in a urban neighborhood. My duck is neither small nor is she quiet, but she is sweet and funny and the neighbors enjoy watching her play when we are out on a "adventure" in the backyard :D check your laws though and make sure it's legal for you to own a duck in your city

Ducks are allowed bout would you say that they require more care than chickens? Also I once heard that mallards are quiet but pretty squirmy and aren't as docile as a Pekin.

I've never had a chicken but I've had dogs/cats/parakeets/ and various other pets and imo, while she may require more care than other pets, my duck is super sweet and I love the bond I have with her. With a dog, you can open up the front door and my dog would have run right out it. Now when you open the door my duck just stands there and looks at me, waiting to see what I'm going to do

Most people who have both usually say Ducks are more work because of the mess. As a Mallard owner I can assure you they are quite loud and very squirmy. Especially the hens

My Pekin is the loudest of the three (and the largest) I have a mallard and a cayuga, and so far the cayuga is the quietest, but I believe he's the drake of the group. Ducks need a companion, so if you can, try to get a pair. You don't want a depressed duck on your hands. They are defintely more work than my chickens, by far! But the antics and DuckTV are so worth it!
