What else makes a noise like a chicken?

Ruffed grouse- they cluck just like a chicken. Listen for them drumming in spring.

could have been any raptar. They are pretty good at mimicking. Or myna bird. We have a family of mynas nesting in our front yard that sound just like our parrot and cockatiel and has a great selection of other bird noises, including our chickens now. Every time I hear the chicken noises at night I have to remind myself that chickens are quiet at night, even if one didn't make it to to coop before lockup. (I always do a head count). Raptors can even mimic human voices. Scary.

the grouse is a pretty bird, I will have to keep any eye out for them. I should take up bird watching since I live in the ideal spot for it.

Speaking of Mynas,.... when I was a kid, some friends of the family had a pet Myna. The man was old, & infected with black lung from years in the coal mines. He had a VERY bad cough,......... & so did the bird.

I was amazed the first time I heard the bird mimic the cough & not turn inside out!

My chickens aren't all that quiet at night. Maybe they talk in their sleep or something. I can walk by the hen house during the night and say, "How's it going, Hilda?" Then I will hear a soft, "Brrrrrrrrrrruhhh. Brrrrrrruhhg." If I leave the window open in the living room at night and just sit quietly, I will hear all kinds of sounds from the hen house. It doesn't seem like they are having olympic games in there or anything, but there might be some pillow talk going on, or even games of "5 in the bed (and the little one said roll over, roll over)" or "5 little monkeys jumping on the bed." lol

I suspect, though, if a chicken were alone in the woods at night, she would be hiding out and quiet as possible.

i have a friend who's a retired Chaplain, and been all around the world. He and his wife take in raptars from the county that for whatever health reason cant live in the wild. have lots of beautiful room with trees overlooking the ocean. one day when he was feeding the flock his wife called.his name. he answered. no response back. she called his name a second time. he's hard of hearing and couldn`t pinpoint her voice. answered a second time. no response. she called his name a third time. he hollered a response. the wooden screen door banged open . she stood there with hands on her hips demanding to know what the heck was going on. one of the birds learned to mimic both of em calling the other.

It wouldn't be likely to be on the ground, but we have black-capped night herons around here that sound like a chicken in distress. They call before they set out for the night and again when they're settling in to roost for the day. I don't know if an owl would take on a black-capped night heron, though; it would have to be a pretty big owl.
