My coop bedding is wood chips, mostly because I have a lot of it and it's free. Directly under the roost I'm currently using hemp to make it easier to sift out poops for my compost. I've tried wood shavings in the past but didn't particularly like it... I use it just in nest boxes (cheaper than hemp) and my brooder (since it's large flake unlike the hemp).
