What gender and breed is this?

Thank you very much for the complimemt. We're still trying to get close to her. Ever since we brought her home she's been hiding under an old car we have here. She's getting braver though. Today's the first day she's actually come out from under the car while I'm still nearby. I would like to get some closer pics to post but it may take me a while to gain her trust. She looks very hawk like in the face.
Yes, definitely, she has hawk-like features and almost colors. I have an Amerucana Buckeye mix, and she is pretty - almost like a hawk as well with a black beard. And yes, with chicks, it takes time to gain their trust. I give mine their own call, like; 'Here Chickies!' and they know I've got something delectable for them. Good luck with her!

Normally when I go out to feed them I say "Here Chicken Little" that's what I've started calling her, lol. I have a bigger black hen (I'm not sure what breed she is either) that comes right out, but Chicken Little normally stays hiden until I walk away. Or she'll dart out from under the car directly under the horse trailer next to and then she'll dart back under the car again lol.

That's so cute, she'll get use to it eventually! And yeah, my neighbor has a flock of older and younger chickens and their place to hide is under the camper or the trailer. They listen to the call though - they've gotten use to it. And aw, such a cute name!

Well thank you very much for the useful information. I'm glad I now know what I have, lol. Now I can't wait to start getting some pretty blue or green eggs. Hopefully. I read somewhere that not all of the EE's lay blue or green eggs. I'll cross my fingers for now!!

I was going to post a pic of my black hen to see if y'all know what she might be but I think I got lucky when I got the 1st pic to load! I think I'll wait til I get wifi so I can use my laptop to post the picture. Getting the 1st pic to load was a NIGHTMARE!! It took me quite a few hours to get that done.

She looks like a beautiful EE hen.

EE's do look very hawklike - too bad that doesn't deter real hawks. Maybe when you go to give the black hen a treat you could flip something at the EE. If she likes it she may start to get jealous of the other one getting treats and may come out of hiding sooner. Sometimes it helps to just sit on the ground and pretend to be reading or listening to soft music with small treats near you. So she sees you are not a predator. She'll come around eventually but, may never like being picked up or held.

Ok, I think I'll try that. I'll sit down on the ground and just wait with goodies at hand, lol. I really do want to gain her trust, she's seems to be really sweet but very timid. My 12 year old daughter has actually held her a couple times so I'm thinking she's afraid of adults because of the size difference, which I can understand. And kids always have goodies which I'm sure helps her confidence, lol.

It's good to be trying, though. I hold my chickens a lot for periods around 10+ minutes but usually only with the content ones that will gain trust better from knowing that closer contact with the person won't actually do any harm. In a way, holding them can make them more skiddish sometimes - perhaps in your case, I'm not sure, but it happens with me too with specific chicks. But, just keep trying, and eventually Chicken Little will trust you. Besides, she's still a little baby.

Yeah, I will

Yes, I will definitely try, within her comfort zone. I'll just let her do as she pleases and slowly gain her trust til I can maybe pick her up or have her in my lap. I would love that! I'm definitely going to try your advice though and just sit and wait for her to come to me. What do you give your girls for treats? Like I said, I'm relatively new to chickens so I don't know what they like as far as goodies, lol. I've heard they like meal worms and shrimp, I'm assuming dried would be best? What else might they like?

I give my chickens and chicks dried meal worms and on special occasions, seeds (like bird seeds - they especially enjoy sunflower seeds with or w/o the black shell; mine eat either). However, I'm sure you could look up other things! They absolutely love the leftovers of some meals that we give to them. They also love bread a lot, I sometimes give them the bread that are on the ends of loaves (the ones that some people don't eat because there's no benefit of eating it as a sandwich really). I've never given mine shrimp, but any type of meat is definitely something of a treat.
