I have two young ameraucanas and they are looking a bit different. Both have different combs and feathers. I'm wondering if one is a rooster...

Any help id-ing would be much appreciated!
Thank you :)

1 looks like a pullet. I'm not sure about 2. And, they're a breed called Easter Egger, not really Ameraucanas. I'm sure they were labelled Ameraucana when you purchased them, but they're often mislabeled by the places selling them. They should still hopefully lay you a pretty blue or greenish egg.

YAY!!! Thanks for setting me at ease.
Just curious... how could you tell?

They are not Ameraucanas because of their color. Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Brown Red, Buff, Silver, Wheaten and White are the registered Ameraucana colors as far as I know. Anything that is not one of those colors and carries a tinted egg gene is called an easter egger. I can tell that both your easter eggers are pullets because they have small combs and are colored up like pullets. Roosters of that color would have red/orange-y splashes of color on their wings and would be more vibrantly marked. Very pretty pullets by the way.

Good to know they are EE's, and I am sooo happy to hear they are both pullets.

They are both super sweet birds and I really did not want to have to re-home Marge (#2) who I thought might be a roo, she is the largest/most dominant.
I guess they are developing diferent combs because they are not a specific breed?? I love their coloring and their cute little beards!!
Thanks all for your help!!

Erin, is there a specific grouping of photographs showing Americauna "colors" that you listed (Rooster vs Hen, cockrell vs pullet, baby chick too!)? Also, is there information available how what to breed with what to produce the desired color standard?

I can sometimes find 1 or 2 throughout the forum, in books, various online sites. But by the time I look for another, I have to start over again. I've read alot of material regarding the Ameracaunas, but their specific feather coloring, shank colorings and comb variations are hard to pin down. With respect in comparison to the often gorgeous Easter Eggers that come along the way, I think they are both excellent. Just confusing.

Would love to find away to eliminate the mislabeling issues and educate folks who sell these birds, who are most often adding to the confusion of these 2 breeds.
Sounds like a good project to pull together.

Thanks in advance.
