What got my hen? Again..... It's Coyotes??

One of my Modern Game hens disappeared yesterday. I let the girls out (mixed breeds) and the boys (I have two roosters) as usual. We also take a head count every evening when they go in the coop. The Modern Game was missing. Must have been either a fox, raccoon or coyote. I kept them in the run today, and I will throughout the winter. I guess predators are short on food during the colder months. Sooo sad. My little one still cries over it. We are emotionally

attached to these chickens. Had nine: seven girls and two roosters.

UPDATE: I found my poor Modern Game under a tree. Feathers spread all around, it looks like there was a fight. Her head and neck were picked clean, nothing of the body. But now the birds, whatever they're called are picking on her body. Does anybody know what eats just the head and the neck?

So I found out that it is Coyotes, there where two crossing my driveway when I got home

Any ideas on what I should do for Coyotes. We got the rooster today he is a total baby. I sat there and was petting him for a good 15 minutes and he was as happy as could be. He will run up to eat out of my hand and loves for me to scratch his face for him. I don't think he is that old his spurs have just come in a little ( will post some pics ) He is very *Interested* in my girls. When I got home I put the girls in the fenced in area and he had a fit!

He had only seen them thru the crate door for maybe a minute at the most. I am down to three hens now should I get a couple more?

Thanks

Just because Coyotes crossed your driveway, doesn't mean they did it. Certainly, be careful, though. Any coyote would love fresh chicken. Still don't disregard intelligent raccoons. If you have predators, you need to secure your egg-makers and your studly Roo, until the threat has clearly left the area. Failure to do so, just teaches them to catch and kill live chickens. Depending on your State's predator laws, you may dispatch the predators to protect your flock. However, another predator may step in to fill the void.

So sorry for your loss. Your Roo is a handsome fella, btw

Your gals will like him, certainly!

I was talking with a neighbor and he said that he has had problems with coyotes as well. My other neighbor put up a kennel for his cats to keep out coyotes, fox and hawks. He told me this in the spring and did not think much of it. As I have never had a problem, could a raccoon carry off a chicken and there not be any feathers left?

Thanks
