Sometimes the hens are clumsy and step on the eggs and sometimes they squash the eggs . I have had it happen to me with my hens . DId she have alot of eggs under her ?
I've never had a broody hatch, only hatched with an incubator...so I don't know what to tell you deb, sorry. Poor lil chicky.
She is in her own quarters this mom? So no one else could have jumped in and started pecking and investigating? Or maybe she did? Like someone else said, she may have squashed the egg?
and the chick is curled up tight in the egg...so i know it looks like a lot of chick for the egg...but it probably wasn't stretched out until the egg got broke and then it expanded...so I don't think the egg was too small for the chick. But I'm no expert.
I had a hatch be fully formed and not pip...perhaps 8 of them out of 18, it is very sad to see them that way. So close but so far away.
