What happened to my Dog

That's one heck of a wound! Whatever happened, I'm glad he's OK. And good luck (really!) on keeping him quiet

Superglue was originally developed during the Viet Nam war to seal small wounds closed instead of using stitches. It works great on dogs, cats, and horses, too!

While super glue was reportedly used during the Vietnam war, it was not developed for that purpose, or even during that time period. It was actually invented in the 1940s. It was never approved for sealing woulds during the Vietnam war either.

They do have medical grade super glue now, it still isn't advised to use regular super glue for sealing wounds.

Errr...it may not have been "approved" but it WAS used. I know because I was one of the grunts it was used on! Worked like a charm and never left a scar. And as recently as 2 years ago I had a vet tell me to use regular ol super glue to close a dog's bleeding ear instead of hauling him to the clinic on a Sunday afternoon.

My uncle was a flint knapper, in other words he made stone tools like arrowheads, knives, axes, etc. He really made some beautiful stuff and did lots of studying of the materials used by the different Native American tribes, as well as the different designs. Any of those stones that flaked off to make a razor sharp edge, like obsidian, were dangerous and even using leather pads didn't prevent him from getting cut occasionally. He used superglue to close his wounds and swore by it. He said that as the healing took place inside the glue flaked off the outside. The greatest advantage was the minimal scarring. Recently I read that it was being used for cosmetic surgery for that reason. Incredible, isn't it? (Am I the only one who ever glued her fingertips together?

The medical grade glue stuff is amazing, when used properly. My ds was bitten by our guinea pig some years ago, and the ER glued his injury. Unfortunately, they did not prescribe abx to go with it, (guinea pigs are clean animals, you don't need them! @@) and the next day, ds was in severe pain, and had a red line running up his arm. Lesson learned, always get abx with glue treatment!

OP, I hope your dog heals up well, and good luck keeping him quiet.
