Solved What happens when someone else takes over an older thread

I think @drumstick diva means that while a question is being answered somebody asks their own question and then people ignore the original question to ask their own...? For example, maybe in a “none of my eggs hatched” thread somebody might post their own question like “how do I keep my humidity up” and then the attention gets directed to that question and the thread gets “taken over”. I think.
:goodpost:
A good example of a GOOD take over would be on a thread I created a very long time ago. My Homemade V.S. Store thread
I never ever get a single alert to remind me to join back into this forum. There are many great posters whom are keeping it alive as I am absent. I think it is wonderful to go back and see all of the additions and contributions. I have so many threads that it is hard to keep up without an activity alert. I have un-watched/reset back to watch/dumped browsers data and re-watched but never one single alert. I use a bookmark to find it.

Without members taking over that thread, it would die and dissipate in my absence from being too spread out.

In a case like this one could report the post in question and the mods could move it to it and all replies to it's own thread.

No I guess I didn't make myself clear. I'll try an example. Say there is/was a thread
called "Grandma" and the OP get replaced by someone else. Thread is still called "Grandma "and original OP is getting the post count," like 'count etc. Astronomical totals for a thread that was continued/ TAKEN OVER just 2 years ago. What I am trying to say, is when someone new takes over - the counts should start at 0.
I still don't understand.

Once there is one new post on a thread you get an alert.
If you don't check THAT alert you are not going to get another alert for a post on the same thread until you check the first alert.

O boy. Does that even make sense?

I don't use the pop up window to view alerts. I click on "see all alerts".. never any for that thread.. I started an investigating thread a long time ago on this subject.
I don't wish to hi jack this thread with this alert problem.
I just wanted to bring to attention there are good benefits of having a thread take over.
Thanks kiki.. we can talk about alerts on that thread if you like..:hugs

I'm not 100% sure I understand either... sorry

Can you clarify by what this means: "OP get replaced by someone else." What does "replaced" mean?

Also, I'm confused on this: "original OP is getting the post count". The original poster of a thread doesn't receive any additional "post count" based on the number of replies.

Now, if an OP has a VERY popular thread that gets a lot of visits, that might increase the number of likes their first post receives.

Regarding closing old threads: This is a frequent discussion on all popular and old forums. Our stance is this: If a thread has content that inspires someone to post in reply, then that person should be able to reply to that thread. That said, there are a few rare cases where a new post is totally irrelevant to the old thread, and we'll sometimes move that post into its own thread... but again, that's rare.

I guess I am going to bring this thread back to life! I know this is always an ongoing discussion about "zombie" threads, in all sorts of sites -- even back to the VAX days!! but the TOPIC never dies! People going to the INTERNET for information don't actually care about the OP! They want the info! If it had to do with the original poster as a personal note, that would be called an EMAIL! 🤣 I love finding a thread that is complete, instead of having to sort through another and another for piecemeal information, as well as the natural flow of connected advice.. How many points am I going to get with this? 😂 (Who cares about the points, people are here for info!) (and @drumstick diva can you look at my silkie post !! https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/silkie-sex-and-color.1384211/#post-22733713 and don't hate me!! )🥰
