It also prevents you from seeing their posts and generally if you block someone, it is like they do not exist.

If you are 'ignoring' someone and cannot see their posts, can they still see yours? I had to do this to one inexplicably nasty person, and I don't want them to see my posts...

Yes, unfortunately can still see your posts. And they won't know you've ignored them.
