Its not easy keeping predators out but it can be done. I've never lost one to predators.

I don't free-range mine, and they have a covered run to be in during the day. I seen the hawk a couple time's today while I was out there pulling up weed's eyeballing my flock in the pen. I talked to my neighbor across the street and found out that there are 2 hawk's, not just one hawk. The lady said that she went out to her back yard and seen one of the hawk's sitting on top of her coop one day and chased it off. Meanwhile another lady that lives next door to her had all of her flock killed by the hawk's already, as she free-ranged her's.

So I wasn't entirely funnin' I mean someone might live near some tigers right? It's a global BYC community? As to lions we do have rumors of them following the waterways this far south. I've only seen a photo of one that supposedly was checking in on things through someone's sliding deck door.

My response is based on what has killed any of my hens.

Can we add a "Pet Sitter as Killer" category? Once had to use a slovenly gal as a last minute pet sitter when my dad passed away. She was too stupid and in a hurry to round up all 6 of my girls to secure them in their run on the one night we were away at my dad's memorial service. Poor Ruby got locked out and subsequently killed by a raccoon, but in my mind, she was killed by the pet sitter.
