What hatchery did you use?

I got mine from MM born May 5th 2007. I ordered 25 standard run mixed breed. Got 29 healthy chicks. 15 hens and 14 roos. No compaints.

Have an order on the way from Meyer for the feather legged bantams for 15. We'll see how that goes.

What you ordered: 5 Blue Silkies, 5 Mottled Cochins, 5 Black Tailed Buff Japs, 5 Silver Sebrights, 5 Araucanas (which are really Easter Eggers) All Bantams, Straight Run, They included a Silver Spangled Hamburg for our free Mystery, which we opted out on but got anyways.

Positive Feedback: We lost a few chicks that were smaller than the rest, recieved credit for them. Great customer service.

Other Info: Our flock will be 6 months old on Monday. Was pleasantly surprised to have 3 girls, 2 boys out of each breed (except for the ones we lost when they arrived) considering we had to order Straight Run. We really expected more boys.

Hatchery: Sand Hill Preservation Center
Date chicks received: Spring 2005 and May 2007
What you ordered: Rhode Island Red, Light Brown Leghorn, and Exchequer Leghorn
Positive Feedback: The Rhode Island Reds turned out to be pretty decent in '05.
I do have some good looking RIRs again in 2007, but most of the roosters' combs were not to my satisfaction. It seems like that was the case in '05 also.
Negative Feedback: In 2005, the Brown Leghorn cock I saved for breeding turned out to not be aggressive enough and the pullets grew spurs their first year. One of the Exchequers was mixed with Dorking blood and a cock I saved was black without white mottling.
In 2007, the Leghorns had decreased in quality to a noticeable extent. A few Brown Leghorns with pink flesh instead of yellow for legs and other faults (side sprig and wrong wing feather markings) and Exchequers of a poor type with roosters' combs dented on one side. One Exchequer actually was a cross beaked chick in the box, and I have never seen one. Also had never seen a side sprig. Have only seen pictures in books of such defects before.
Other info: I posted this because I want to warn people that I do not think the hatchery does an acceptable job of breed preservation. They are a not for profit corporation with preservation as their expressed goal. But they do not put together good breeding pens, and you get birds that lack the accepted appearance for the breed. I have spent a large sum of money and time on preserving these three breeds and wanted to point out that most hatcheries care about producing numbers, which equals money. Quality is not the priority.
Will you order from them again? Maybe, just for RIRs or Buckeyes. I will not order Leghorns, unless I talk to the owners about what the parent chickens will be. Otherwise I would be foolish to pay good money for the birds, plus all the food they will eat, only to have Leghorns to butcher in the fall.

i havent ordered chicks in a few years.but ive delt with both ideal an MM.an i would do business with them again.im going to get chicks in 2008 with a friend.but i dont know where we will order from.im letting him pick the place to get chicks from.

Hatchery/Farm: Cackle Hatchery
Date chicks received: June '07
What you ordered:25 BR, 25 Redstar,5 Blk Australope,5Cherry Egger,5 RIR, and some silkys and bantys ST. Run (we ordered with two friends.)
Positive Feedback: All Chicks Healthy none of us lost any at all.The small Banty/Silky chicks were seperated in the box. We were on Vacation and they were good about when the chicks would need to arrive so we would be back by then.
Negative Feedback: The 25 Red stars didn't come when our friend called about them they said they were out she had to order another breed they were out of them too so she ended up with Cherry Eggers and out of the 25 Three where roosters. Two of the BR where roosters.
Other info:This was our first time ordering
Will you order from them again? Yes, might want to try another just for comparison.

I've been working on putting together some hatchery pages. There would be a main hatchery page where it tells the basics (location, breeds of chickens, etc)

Hi,.
How is this page coming?
I think it'd be a great idea.
And lots of help,
Thank you
