What have you been reading?

Pics
Finished this week:

Hearts of Fire: Eight Women in the Underground Church and Their Stories of Costly Faith by Voice of the Martyrs

The Great Gilly Hopkins by Kathrine Paterson (I really really liked this one. It’s probably my favorite so far this year)

The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer

Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two by Joseph Bruchac

Strange but True Alabama by Lynne Hall ( Almost DNFed this one. I’ve read a lot of similar books to this one and the research for this one felt like the author did the bare minimum. A lot of the facts were out of date at time of publishing or are strongly debated about by historians. The attempts at humor were poor too. It alternated between kindergarten level potty humor and s*x jokes)

The Shadow Queen By C.J. Redwine

Started:
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett (listening to an old favorite on audio book since my physical copy got lost in the last move)

I’ve been reading a lot of children’s/young adult fantasy lately because of a stressful start to the year but I’m starting to get back in mood for nonfiction and classics again.

This is a great thread! I’m new here but will be watching for book ideas. I’m a reader who gets overwhelmed at selection so I always like someone to suggest books.
Currently: going through a Bible app and podcast, enjoying that a lot
Just finished: The Master and Margarita (Mikhail Bulgakov)
I like to re-read “Where the Red Fern Grows” every once and a while. Also could read “Count of Monte Cristo” or “Pride and Prejudice” every few years and enjoy it.
Series: Anne of Green Gables, Liminey Snickets Series of Unfortunate Events, Harry Potter
I did make it through “Anna Karinina” last year and really liked it.
“Poison wood Bible” and other stories (short and long) by that author are really good too. Gosh, really bad memory!
Did a poetry spell too last year: lots of old poems and really neat to think about the imagery and wonderful art of poems. That got me to try to read the Odessey but I didn’t make it through…
I like non-fiction too: just read “Braiding Sweetgrass” (can’t remember author and typing on phone) and “The Mother Tree” or something similar about all the networks under the soil! Fascinating!
Also read a book “Why did the chicken cross the world” about the history of chickens- also fascinating!
I tend to read things that focus on nature and animals. But love all the ideas on here. Keep them coming!

That was a slog, but very good, read it years ago.
Prodigal Summer is one of my rereads for years now.

Read this a few weeks ago, it was good but it got repetitious.

Finished this week:

The Iliad by Homer (finally! This one took me 3 weeks to finish!)

Wings of Opportunity: The Wright Brothers in Montgomery Alabama by Julie Hedgepeth Williams
(A very well written book about an very interesting topic)

Started this week: None

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, by Karen Joy Fowler. I am in the middle of this and enjoying immensely.

One Good Dog, by Susan Wilson. I finished that last week and enjoyed it. It was somewhat predictable, and some would be put off by the dog being a narrator.

Finished:

Not Hungry by Kate Karyus Quinn

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett (This is one of my all time favorite books)

The Wish Granter by C. J. Redwine (#2 in the Ravenspire series)

Taken by Nora McClintock

The Essential Grimm’s Fairy Tales by Jacob and Wilhelm Grim

Started:

Nothing to Fear by Jackie French Koller

The Traitor Prince by C.J. Redwine (#3 in the Ravenspire series)

Hidden History of North Alabama by Jacquelyn Proctor Reeves

Bandit: A Daughter’s Memoir by Molly Brodak

Book Haul!
I finally found a good used book stores in the town north of me. I got two books there and the rest are from thrift stores in the area. The only problem is that now that I’ve found a good used bookstore I’ve had to ban myself from going back there until my at home TBR pile is down to 10 or less

I made an exciting discovery today! My county only has one library for the entire county and it has a fairly limited selection. We had two other tiny ones but they closed during covid. Its not bad for a rural library but it’s nothing like the one we went to when we lived in the next county over. Well there’s a nearby town that straddles the county line which has caused all kinds of drama for the 15+ years regarding public services. Everything from roads to water to the library. Well this year they finally decided to allow our county residents access to the library even though it’s technically not in our area. They’ve also given us a large discount on a out of town library card which would give us access to our old library in the town where I work! I’m excited since I know this library carries books and series our local library doesn’t that I’ve been wanting to read for years.

Man, that stinks.
Even tho our county is all pretty rural, we have a good spread of branches that have innerbranch loans.
Even better, we have a state wide library loan system.
