What have you repurposed while building ?

Pics
I wish I had pictures to show you, but my BIL re-purposed an old wooden baby crib to use as a fence for his run. He has the house and a backyard fence for three sides, so he could use both sides and both ends of the crib as the fence. He put hardware cloth on all of it and uses the ends as gates. It looks beautiful! My brother took an old wooden playpen and turned it into a triangular mini coop. There are so many baby things that they say aren’t safe anymore, so they’re great for repurposing.
I guess I'm a medical miracle. I grew up playing dodge ball in elementary school. I've never worn a helmet for any activity ...played baseball (in metal cleats) & softball for longer than I can remember. Took out the catcher if he was blocking the plate when I was trying to score. Played tackle football on occasion without pads. Was never picked up in front of the house by a school bus (which I rode for 11 of my 12 years in school). The other year a walked 3 blocks to Elementary school. Hitchhiked before I could drive, and picked up hitchhikers later on. Walked the railroad tracks frequently. Rode in the open back of pickup trucks with team mates. Never used seat belts unless I chose to. Even went trick or treating.

How did I ever survive without all the government intervention?

Great thread Rachel! I love the ones where we all get to see different approaches different folks in different areas have and share our Ms/Mr Cheap ideas in chicken keeping:yesss:'

MR/MRS CHEAP ??? I certainly dont call these geniuses cheap. I would rather say thrifty, creative, imaginative reconstructive engineers!! These engineers see gold in those castoffs and are mining that gold. Sounds so much better!!!!:lau

That's an absolutely ingenious idea!! I'm sure that's not something you necessarily run across everyday but what a really cool use for them:thumbsup
Right, I just happened to have some when I was building my coop. The other great thing about them is that they can be removed easily (just unscrew the screws) and used somewhere else without the pulling, bleeding, warping, etc. of HC or chicken wire.

used like cat travelling crates for nesting boxes, old car mats for lining the bottom of wooden nesting boxes makes cleaning a snap, on the same line a industrial all weather entry mat for covering the coop floor perfect fit 4 by 6 super easy to clean, not super original but using dog kenneling as my chicken run. used left over marble slabs from a kitchen counter company near me for my anti digging barriers and the and the bathroom sink cut outs and walking pavers in the run so during the winter and wet times not walking in mud also used these slabs as cooling stones for my rabbits to lay on. two old wood swing sets are now climbing structures for my goats (both were free)

My barn to chicken coup!
10x12 coup with 12x12 run and 40x40 fenced yard for free range time.

I "remodeled" a two-seater outhouse. I took 2 feet off the bottom, put it on wheels, and built a nesting box off one side. It is also insulated and "wired" with a solar light and a solar powered, photo-sensor chicken door. I had nesting boxes mounted inside but the girls didn't seem to like them. The nesting box I built was a hit.
