What heartworm preventative do you use?

I use Ivermectin for dogs, cats and chickens and plan to use it for heartworm protection in the same way that rcb does.

This year as we plan on actually taking our dogs outside( Narnia is a bichon and enjoys not getting aten by loose dogs form the park across the street so she stays in our yard mostly). We are using an all in one drop that does heart worm, fleas, worms earmites. we start in June though in our area.

We just started Sadie on Heartguard Plus at around 9 weeks old. I also just did her first Frontline Plus last week.

I think from now on, I will stick with the natural products for fleas/ticks. I just Sergeant's Nature's Guardian Natural Flea and Tick Spray for dogs and puppies. It also has the same ingredients as the cat one, so I also use it on the cats. Seems to work so far. My one cat gets FAD when she gets bitten by fleas, and when I apply this she doesnt get anymore bumps, and her old bumps from the flea bites go away. One bite can set her off.

Actually it might be the Sentry Natural Defense Flea & Tick Spray For Dogs & Puppies. They look alike.

I'm in maine and also a veterinary tech (pet nurse)- we've got you beat sherry, we had 9 positive lymes and 2 anaplasmosis in one day! (these are from ticks for those that don't know), thankfully no heartworm. most of our heartworm is from transplant rescue dogs form the south.
I use interceptor- kills one more worm then heartgard and advantix for fleas and ticks. frontline kills the ticks when they get on the dog, advantix keeps them from ever getting on. I'd rather not see those nasty things at all.

do NOT use products labelled for dogs and puppies on your CAT! you can kill it. the ingredients maybe the same but the strength may not be. there is a reason it is labelled for dogs/puppies and cats were left off the label. it's NOT for cats!

I compared everything, the ingredients, %, etc, and it was the exact same thing. Im not stupid.

I did the heart worm deal and my dog basically came out of his skin,..was eating himself like he was flea infested. Next time around, same thing,..I told the vet no more. Well it wasn't maybe 7 year til I understood why. My dog got hit by a car. He went to the vet, vet says looks good, but let's xray just in case and then the trouble began. They sedate to xray,..an hour later my husband brought home a very big dog, limp and out of it. My husband said should be up and around in an hour or so. I said hmmm, because when they put my Basset hound under for spay, by the time I came back to pick her up, which was within an hour She was up and about and walked out of the vets (long story short...she was already spayed and vet didn't figure it out until she knocked her out,..did I mention we don't use that vet anymore).
So 8 hours later dog is still limp and out of it,..I start googling the meds,..then I decide to add the breed australian shepard mix,...and low and behold,..a genetic mutation in the breed, they should not be sedated as you would normally and then I see the heartworm med issues was not in my head it also reacted to the genetic defect of the australian shepards. My dog was out of it for 2 days, my vet had to come out to the house to help us gurney him outside to manually relieve him,..not only was I scared but I could see the vet was as well. He had never heard of the genetic deal with the aussies, so needless to say we have that noted on Baileys chart and my vet has a new item for his bag of tricks.
For me I give nothing to any of my animals without really weighing the ramifications, I did not blame my vet, but I see for myself we take alot of expert advise for granted that it is what is right and I see it isn't so much. Oh so, heart worms,..we use nothing.
