what i learned today while building the banties house....

1) if at first you don't succeed, get longer nails and a bigger hammer....

2) if you're wearing flipflops and you take them off... turn them upside down... or you will put them back on without realizing one of the birds pooped on it....

seriously though.. was about to give up on this project, then ran across the nails i wanted to buy at home depot but couldn't find.. hubby had a box of them in a desk drawer with some stuff from when we were trying to make an incubator.. SCORE!!!!
this project is flying now... all i needed was the nails i knew i wanted to begin with.. lol...

hopefully i'll have pics in the next couple of days so you guys can laugh with me...

I also learned that a good battery powered drill and wood screw come in handy...

When using the bigger hammer watch out! (As I and others can attest to)

ya know, my left thumb has been mostly numb for about... well since maybe march?... and for as numb as it is because the nerves got cut to it.. it sure does hurt like hell when i hit it with a hammer.. lol....

ya know, i used to use cordless drills all the time in theatre, and never had an issue with them...
since i've been married for some reason the drill doesn't like me... now i'm wondering if i have the same issue with the drill that i had with the hammer and nails... being htat my husband buys ridiculous screws... i bet if i went down and got the right screws it might work.. just like when i went and got the right nails... hhmmmmmmm

i was much handier before my husband came along thinking he knew it all... lol...

Yeah....I discovered the cordless drill and phillips screw heads and now I wont use a hammer unless there is no other way..Too many smashed thumbs !!

We did have to use hammer and nails when we roofed our coop...and Hubby and I laughed so hard at each other....every time we smashed a thumb....we were keepin score to see who did it the most times during our roof building!

I learned that a big hammer can give you a painful arm for weeks afterwards. LOL But it sure is nice to be able to see something take shape.
I learned that you do not remove a circular saw from the wood till it slows to a stop( I cut the cord into).
I learned how to fix a cord.
I learned it sure is hard to take out long...... nails from Dry Oak wood. Also to get said nails in it. I learned to drill holes first.
I learned to accept imperfect work. ....... Lots of it.
I learned that paint covers a lot of ills.
I learned that what paint doesn't cover you can say were left for ventilation. Well so what if one is long and one is short.
I learned I'm not 20 or 30 or 40 or 50 anymore. I learned a lot but enjoy it immensly. Gloria Jean

I am so glad I am not the only one learning how to build coops, and learning to live with the mistakes! Our first coop was built with scrap wood, its absolutely hidious! The next coop was a barn-look storage building with divided compartments inside and divided runs outisde. Runs are not finished yet but the inside looks great even after I had to redo some of the compartments to make them bigger. I actually can do some of the work all by myself now!

I learned today, while sealing up the windows for winter, that I have a hen that gets so perturbed at me when I'm in the coop while she's trying to lay, that she will turn around in the nest box and show me her hind end...and lay her egg that way!!
