I was thinking of putting some sevin dust (5%) in the sand where my chicks dust bathe. They are bad to peck around in the sand and I am wondering if they eat a little of it how will it affect them.
Thanks Roseraye

I've never lost one to sevin. I add to my dirt piles all the time. When it rains and dries I do it again, I add it to their shavings when I clean out the coop. Mine you don't overdue it but it definately works.

JMO- I wouldn't put that anywhere near my animals or food. Why on earth would you need it? I am always curious who was the inventor of poison to be used on food....

Just did a little "google" research. Sevin is meant for use on crops (corn, cotton, grapes). It is for leafroller, cutworm, and leafflolder insects. This info is from the bayer site (which makes Sevin). I saw nothing about using it for animals... And it does kill honeybees.

We use it on our chickens and the neighbors use it on their goats. It's fine! It works great for mites. We put it inside the coop and on the chickens themselves.

I guess everybody has chickens for a different reason. I figure if I am going to go the trouble of growing my own food (veggies and eggs), I want them to be healthier than what is available in the grocery. So, organically grown is very important to me. If I wanted food and eggs with insecticide and poison on them, I could buy them at the store...JMO

Thanks for your replies, I am going to dust a little for mites.
Lesa, I respect your opinion, I guess we could discuss insecticides till the cows come home. I use a little Sevin in my garden for bugs when I need it. I don't think I over do it and have never worried about the food I grow. I know everyone have their opinions and as I said before I respect yours.
Thanks, Roseraye

Just researched it quickly, and it is Carbaryl. Silkie chicks have been hatching in a pen with four Moms who laid their eggs on the floor--they didn't like nests I'd put in there. I had recently dug out several inches of litter and soil in there, sprayed the entire coop with Poultry Protector, put down DE and hydrated lime and new pine chips. Nevertheless, the chicks were hatching with mites on them. Even had mites on an egg I removed. Fearing the mites more than Sevin, I put a small amount in one hand and carefully rolled each newly-hatched chick in it before placing them in the brooder. Some of the chicks are now two weeks old, and there have been absolutely NO problems.

Lesa,i am with you.why add a chemical.this link shows the safety is in question.a known human carcinogen.decided from the beginning not to deal with the closest feed store due to misinformation about medicated feed (said chicks would die without it although 2 hens raised from chicks had already started laying).as to the pesticide used by organic farmers it is pyrethrin (made from the dried flowers of the plant pyrethrum) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbaryl
