Dora'smom :

From what I understand, The Urban Farm Store in Portland knows of a farm locally, that takes in the extra roosters, lets them live a decent life, and then processes them at the appropriate time. I don't think the first birds will be ready until early summer, but it's a great idea, and I plan on going to that store to buy the occasional bird. I'm sure they will taste better than a supermarket bird, and I'll be happy to be subsidizing a decent life for the birds.
The woman who runs the rescue must have been reading some of the articles that came out in newspapers, etc. We have had a local article about just such allegations against backyard chicken owners. Why don't they look at all the reasons that people are getting into chicken keeping? A big reason for many people is that it's no longer a secret how bad the egg, and meat bird industries are. If I thought I could get away with it, I would have a rooster, and if I have one in my current batch of teenagers, I will try to fly under the radar for awhile.
What happens to all the rooster chicks hatched out for the egg-laying industry? I'll bet they are disposed of just as cruelly, but none of the articles touch on that.

I worked for a commercial layer hatchery for a couple of days and couldn't stand it. The cockerls were fed into a garbage disposal along with the shells and other hatch waste, it was an economical waste as well as being inhumane, and now I want my own layers more than ever before.

I would take him if you just paid to ship him to me, however I want to stress that you try to find another home first because I only have 2 others (6 wk old white giants 1 pullet and 1 cockerl) and I dont think he would be the happiest, I could give him the care he deserves and a proper home if you can't find anyone else.

Well I am not sure if it is poss to ship a Roo this far, I don't know how long it would take to get here, but if u shipped him to us we would def give him a good home with lots of territory to own. The noisier the better lol.

I'll take your rooster if you'll take mine.
Here's Meatbird:

USPS ships live birds via express mail. Overnight. Costs around $60, plus the special box...which you can get at boxesforbirds.com

Delivery? I'm way up north though, if you travel up my way I would take him...

He's a Partridge Rock. He's big, healthy and sturdy. He's been fed organic feed almost his whole life and has never been sick. He free-ranges a couple of hours every morning and lives with 5 hens. He enjoys long walks and classical music.

Dear Overrun,

My neighbors think I'm nuts because I have roosters. Well, not JUST roosters, but my teenage stepson likes them, so I have more roosters than most people. My roosters live in a large pen, and when I'm not hatching (if they act nice) they share the 24 girls. Right now, I have 4 roosters.

I could adopt your guy, if you could help me with the shipping. I'll go half with you, and I guarantee he won't go hungry, and he won't get eaten for dinner.

Let me know if you're interested - I am in Ohio.

Best wishes.
