our neighbor has chickens that they let freerange. we let ours freerange. not a problem. Actually, we had them in the old coop for like two months, and then moved them to the new coop overnight (which also meant they moved like 400 feet) and let them out the next morning and didn't have a single problem. essentially they just need to know what is home and safe and what isn't.
