The barring is what's causing the white skin. That's why Cuckoo Silkie breeders have such a hard time breeding because something with the Barring neutralizes the hypermelanization in their skin. Something like that lol.

Seriously, must you be so negative and constantly talk down other peoples birds? One man's trash is anothers treasure. You yourself are very proud to show off your tolbunt roo that has an obvious DQ. How would you feel if someone started bashing it?

Why shouldn't the owner be proud? If THEY love their bird, that is all that matters. And, if their kids love it, that is even better! I would never tell one of my kids (or even myself for that matter) that I couldn't keep a bird that I loved just because it didn't conform to what some book says it "should" look like. Does my family breed and show, YES. Do we breed and show according to the standard, YES. However, that being said, if one of my kids wanted to show a bird like that, I would gladly let them because it would make them happy!

All of us here in BYC keep chickens because they make us happy. Somewhere along the lines, I think SOME of us forgot that and have decided to make other people feel bad because their chicken isn't perfect. I wish those people would keep their opinions to themselves, and quit putting others and their chickens down.

100% agree with you!
Some of us just keep chickens cuz we love doing it, in fact I think that most people here do it for that reason I understand and totally respect the breeders here and I believe that they do an awesome job but like said before our backyard quality birds aren't inferior just because they dont meet the standards that "somebody or some book' say they should, our Backyard quality chickens just as valuable to each and every owner. So I strongly encourage breeders to not trash our beautiful birds!

As far as your silkie I think you should be really happy she or he is beautiful besides you don't see silkies like that everyday!

I have one similar to that only it has black skin.

Please, let's not turn this entire thread into an argument. The OP posted this for our enjoyment of examining the odd bird, not to bicker nonsensically about whether or not the bird is ugly/doesn't fit the breed standard.

Here's something to keep in mind when posting and browsing a forum; if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

I think the bird is absolutely gorgeous, and extremely interesting with those peculiarly snow-white shanks!

It almost looks like a Calico silkie that somehow ended up Leucistic.
