What is a "split"?

I keep reading about "splits"...like in the context of Lavender Orps and things of that nature...would somebody please be so kind as to 'splain to me what this means?

I'll attempt to answer...... "split" lav means it has the lav allele(sp) but is not showing the color. Usually the black offspring of a black/lav breeding will be considered "split". If you breed two split birds together you will get a % of the color they are "split" with.........I think

Yeah, I guess....... I really should have paid better attention in Biology class.
 
Yes, and split is usually used in reference to a bird that you KNOW by breeding records is carrying a hidden recessive gene.
