What is BOSS?

Yeah; just walk into the feed store and ask to see their boss, lol

Actually I feed the seedless stuff at the bird feeder for the same reason but considering the price and the amount the girls eat it is cheaper to feed the shell stuff. Since the shells get ground up in their gizzards there is no shell mess--as long as you can avoid the poop. Most songbirds crack the shells for the meat and discard them, chickens just down the whole thing.

Mine totally love BOSS with the shell on. They turn up their beaks at shell-less sunflower seeds.
Oh, and I buy mine in fairly smallish quantities in bulk at Winco. With only four birds I don't go through all that much. But I will probably be putting out more for the wild birds now.

I wouldn't count on BOSS for improving laying. One time I was feeding a little too much BOSS in my ratio and not enough layer mash and my egg production dropped almost immediately. When I stopped feeding so much BOSS, it resumed.

BOSS is more for supplemental protein but not as a main nutrient.

What ratio is recommended?

Basically this and scratch are a treat not to be confused with a regular diet. A few handfuls to a small flock, tossed on the ground, should be sufficient. I toss about a cupful to my 40+ hens just before I lock them up at night and let them scratch around for it so they have something in there crops overnight. In the winter I mix in a little scratch with the BOSS.
