What is chicken math

It is entirely possible to have a half a chicken. Bantam laying hens are a half a chicken (.5) and the tiny ones ie. Serama laying hens qualify as a quarter of a chicken (.25).
I have three bantam hens. One is old and does not lay so she does not count. The other 2 do lay but since they are bantams, I have only 1 chicken.

Since they are bantam, I don't think they should really count at all... So you have no chickens, you need to order chickens!

Here, do THIS math: Bantams + 'not chickens' = no brownies for you!

Ok, Laurajeans bantams count... just enough to get brownies.

Yay!

Okay, so we need to factor the Double B scenario into the math equation (Bantams & Brownies that is) .... I'll leave that to you math pros.

Further checking of the Official Manual of Chicken Counting
tells me that Bantams with both legs are considered as "whole"
little chickens and must be counted.

One bantam = one brownie

However, to be considered as a half-a-chicken the said banty
must be on one wooden leg.

So if you have TWO bantams with one wooden leg each, that would
be counted as only one chicken.

That's good news for MOST of my bantams! (Too bad for little Stumpy...... I don't have the heart to tell him)

Ahhhh, yes that rule is in the Officail Manual Of Chicken Counting from 1859 when pirates needed one small chicken leg to decorate their persons. The more updated version has taken that rule out and replaced it with the half a chicken and quater of a chicken rule. Luckily the bantam to brownie ratio still holds because brownies cannot be halved.

That's true! It IS impossible to halve a brownie, I know from direct experience.

This whole thread is hilarious!
(And very validating- I thought that I was the only one!)
I wanted 6-8 hens; ended up with 5 ducks (after ordering 4), 18 chicks ('cause some would die, and some would be boys) (they all seem to be girls, & none have died)- and 2 incredibly noisy geese.
That's 25 head of poultry- even after I gave the 2 extra chicks away, that the hatchery sent!
We've known about "boat dollars" (VERY much smaller than regular dollars- they hardly count at all) for years- and now, "chicken math"!
I love it.
