So, I went out to let out the chickens, and when my new Rhode Island Red came out, I noticed that there was something white hanging out of her vent. I instantly suspected prolapse. But no, this didn’t look like prolapse. So I took her inside and cleaned her up but the white stuff feels and looks like an egg shell. I found her in the near box. What is it, and should I be worried?

Looks like a collapsed egg membrane from a shell-less egg. I would gently try to pull it out. Keep her away from other chickens. Give her some extra calcium for next 3 days—1/2 a Tums or human calcium tablet to help her contractions to expell an egg and to firm up egg shells.

Looks like she laid a soft shelled egg that broke. I always get worried when that happens, because it can cause problems. Keep an eye on her and make sure that she has oyster shell to peck at. I would also break up a Tums and give it to her, maybe give her a couple a day and make sure she lays a normal egg.

thanks. She’s in a coop now scratching around and being a chicken. I’ll buy her some calcium supplements today. I generally feed my chickens scratch, but these hens are new and have been eating layer pellets. I’ll keep an eye on her.

If you want your hens to be healthy, keep them on the layer feed or a flock raiser type feed. Scratch is something they love and prefer, but it has only half the protein and lacks the balanced nutrients. Then always have a separate container of crushed oyster shell for free taking.

Stop the scratch.
It's not a complete balanced feed for chickens... It is much better for them to eat the layer pellets only.
