What is in your bator? What breed do you love? I need some suggestions~!

Do like I did & get an assortment...LOL I literally have collected 1-2 of almost everything I can get my hands on. I like the variety of colors & sizes in both chickens & eggs. Barnyard mixes come in really handy in getting an assortment too. I got eggs from a BYCer who sent me a rainbow assortment of eggs from under a flock with 3 roos of different breeds over each group of assorted hens. Can't wait to see what pops out!!!

The 1588 hova-bator and my home-made bators.
breeds: Non- hatchery Buff Orpingtons, BBS Barred Rocks, BBS Ameraucana and Lav., EasterEggers, Heritage RIR , and Heritage Delawares.
Better temperment and lay longer.

Wow, is that your bird? She is beautiful!!!

I dont really dis the silkies, I like them cause they are funny looking, I just have this pic in my head of what a chicken looks like and a silkie looks like a stuffed animal, lol , I guess for me if im gonna have chickens I want them to look like chickens, lol

So if you all get non hatchery eggs then where do you get your hatching eggs from? (if you dont have a roo of your own)

This is my first go round at incubating eggs myself (I've always done broody hens in the past). I've got some peafowl eggs in the bator, and I'm getting ready to stick in some EE, RIR, Brahma, and Barred Rock eggs tomorrow. And, yesterday I was lucky enough to find an egg from my Sumatra hen, who rarely lays. So, the babies won't be purebreds, but they'll be gorgeous! :) I wish my bantams were laying...I would stick some bantam eggs in there too.

My favorite personality is a barnyard sex link mix. The color traits that show the most is barred rock. I have one that is such a cutie and trouble maker but she's my favorite.

I got hatching eggs from here in the auction section. Ebay also has eggs though I don't know if I'd by eggs from ebay. We also have a local girl that sells egg on craiglist. Some people also hatch out fertile eggs from the grocery store (farm eggs at a natural food store not the white ones in a normal grocery store).

Well...counting the 13 duck eggs, there are 81 eggs in my bator & 4 under my broody. There will be a LOT of things popping out starting the 30th (in 6 days) up thru the 14th of June. I did a staggered hatch. Then, as soon as all those hatch I start over again...LOL 24 Silkie eggs on the way June 13th!!!!!!

Ok this is my first year to hatch chickens and ducks. I now have Barred Rock, Americanas, Silver and Gold Laced Wyandottes and silkies. In lockdown I have Polish and in two other bators I have more Silkies, Copper Marans, Welsh Harlequin Ducks and Call Ducks.

There is something about every single one of those breeds that caught my eye for different reasons. I do like variety as well. My favorite standard size chicken is a Silver Wyandotte. She is incredibly docile. I have a few Americanas that are really pretty and my Silkies are my cry babies. They follow me around (3 weeks old) and constantly chirping. They are funny to watch and do hold a special place in my heart.

Where did I get my fertile eggs? I have gotten all of them on Ebay.

Have fun picking them out!

Because hatcheries have very poor quality birds - but almost always worse in the Rhode Island Reds. They often don't even look like real RIR.
Oh come on! Don't be dissing the silkies

lol
A lot of people don't like them. They are a love them or hate them kind of bird. I pretty much like them all.
Cochins are wonderful. Mine are very affectionate, lay a really nice sized egg, and are just beautiful to look at.

We get eggs from lots of places but I like the swaps and auctions here and stuff here https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/8/chickenstocks-shows-meet-ups these are especally awsome when you can swap eggs so you dont even have to pay for them and then you can get new stuff for the eggs you already get.
And you can also get actutions and sales and trades herehttps://www.backyardchickens.com/f/36/chicken-hatching-eggs
