It was sad. Sorry I will do better next time.

Forgive me for being a newbie, what is shrink wrapped? Why did you lose them? Im a little confused........
The humidity in the incubator was not high enuf during hatch (last 3 days) and the membrane inside the egg got too dry & trapped the chicks inside the egg. If you catch this in time you can sometimes still save the chick but it takes time & if you have a lot of them to rescue it's very time consuming & you may still lose them anyway.

I am with AOXA. I love my Cochin. Both standard and bantam. They are really sweet, you can get all kinds of colors and they lay really well. They can also get broody but not to bad.

I also like my Ameraucana. They are very easy going, lay blue eggs and come in a bunch of colors. They are easy to show (once you get to that point) but make sure you have true ameraucana and not Easter Eggers. Almost any you get from hatcheries are Easter Eggers. They are very pretty lay from pink, green and blue eggs but can not be shown. If you want true Ameraucana get them from a breeder. There are a few in NC with some great birds.

I agree on the RIR to. Laid back birds that lay very well. I also agree to get Heritage RIR if you can find them. The deep red bodies and blues and greens in the tails feathers can't be beat. They do really well at shows to if you get some good lines. I have seen them on BYC in the eggs for sale section a few times.

If you want good layers that are not show. Red Stars (sex links) or Black Stars are great egg producers.

Jersey Giants are a good multi purpose bird that lay large eggs. They are really sweet birds too.

Brahmas are big birds that are nice. They lay a big egg and growl when they talk. It is fun. They don't lay until 9 or 10 months though.

These are just a few of my favorites. I have many other breeds but we get them for their color, size or the type of eggs they lay. We have gotten breeds and not like them. So don't worry if you get something and don't want it. Just sell it and hatch something else. Be careful though it can get addictive.

OMG I AM IN LOVE with that bird    :th

We get eggs from lots of places but I like the swaps and auctions here and stuff here https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/8/chickenstocks-shows-meet-ups these are especally awsome when you can swap eggs so you dont even have to pay for them and then you can get new stuff for the eggs you already get.
And you can also get actutions and sales and trades herehttps://www.backyardchickens.com/f/36/chicken-hatching-eggs
Thanks :) I think she is stunning, but a few people have told me she has really nice colouring. I didn't even start to notice how nice until this spring. Winter washed her out :p

OP: Thank you as well! She is my bird. I got a cockerel from the same breeder that is at least a year younger than her. Hopefully I can hatch out some beautiful babies just like her :D

Ameraucanas can be hard to find - which really sucks. Make sure to look up the breed standards so you don't get something besides what you pay for (ie: Easter Egger) EE's are great birds as well, but you can not show them.
