What is it with people expecting something for nothing!?

slaughter a day old chick, clean it and dress it out. You can send it over as a sample sized pastured chicken.

Iknow its kind of a gruesome Idea, I only thought of it because when I lived in china they used to sell sparrows for eating in the market. the sparrow sellers would pluck all day to sell bunches of little sparrow carcasses that looked like chickens about as big as 2 thumbs. But everyone ate them. some times youd goto a buffet table at a restaurant and open a chaffing dish to find a pile of little sparrow carcasses.

anyway I diverge.

I dont understand some people. I cant get a chicken raised to adulthood for $10(just calculating the cost of feed) much less a show chicken. I know your experience wasnt on BYC, but I ve experienced it quite a bit on here.

I feel for you but you probably dodged a bullet. She would have chiseled you on shipping costs next.

now Im probably proceeding onto my own rant, but how do people justify hand turning? A $60 machine versus 18 days of turning at a minimum of 3 times a day. Anyone can make $60 in much less time than that.

I hate dealing with 'uneducated' people.. I find that un-informed/uneducated people are the ones who want 'something for nothing'! Most people who take the time to educate themselves about any item, will pay for quality..

I ask alot of questions, some that are in the ad/post etc, because I have been 'burnt' before.. Just think--how many people/hatcheries etc, have ads for Ameraucanas that are REALLY EE... I do not want to drive 50miles to pick up Rhode Island Reds and when I get there they have Red Stars or other 'red' looking mutts! So, I always ask a million questions...

When trying to learn about a new venture: I read, study and ask the same questions until I understand them..

I have paid between $12-$20 for my 'Point of Lay' hens (RIR, BO, BR and true Blue Ameraucanas.. I think I got a deal!

When dealing with these people--I try very hard to be nice, polite and at the end of the comversation---always --say "I do hope you find what you are looking for'... I write their name and number down and do not deal with them again. If they call I will tell them I don't have any---if they leave a message--I just don't return their calls..

Good luck sell you silkies..Dixie

thanks Dixie,

that's how I feel and I am all for helping people with questions, and even if at the end they can't buy what I'm selling that they are asking about as long as they don't make me feel like a person just trying to rip them off and they thank me for taking time out to help them I am happy. But when people make it clear they want what I am selling after asking a ton of questions for way less I just can't take it LOL!

to the other poster about lil sparrow roasts that kinda makes me hungry

All it boiled down to was that they wanted to get you to say that you would take so much less when they acted non interested after all your trouble. Maybe you ought to start with the price right away next time. Now, it is kinda funny because today I kinda did the same thing, only it was honest shock at a price(which I asked right off the bat and was NOT listed) on a half acre lot that went up for sale right beside us. We paid $1200 for the one on the other side of us so it was a complete shock when I was quoted $23,900 for the vacant overgrown snaky lot on the other side! So much for trading our camper for it!

This is along the same lines....it's people who ask for free eggs so they can try out their incubator or are broke and can't afford to pay much if anything, etc and don't even make the offer of paying for shipping! If you can't afford to pay for the eggs how are you gonna feed the chicks when they hatch!!?

Where we live for a normal lot (under a 1/4 acre) is at least $125 000!

Unfortunately most small businesses are facing the same thing, ppl want alot of things for almost nothing because they are not aware of what it takes to run a business, but that's the way of life most of us are facing.

In my Business I am in debt for thousands of $$ to go and grade a yard or do a landscape for someone, but yet they get shocked when I tell them the price tag for my services, well hello, I have Insurance for so much a year, my bobcat has a big o payment every month regardless of the economy, if I am working or not I still have to come up with the payment. Maintnance on this big toys is also skyhigh.

For all the above, I am used to hear what you are facing all the time and I think, we just have to live with it.

Well now it does work both ways. I just drove 6 hours for a rooster that was dirty and smelly and got the 4 hens they were selling but now I think i got 2 roos and one an egg eater at that!
I repeatedly asked for pics of the roo. He is nice looking but not at all friendly like I was told on the phone.
She was going to keep the hens but changed her mind and sold them to me. The roo was $10 and i paid $5 for each hen.
I hadn't gotten their original e-mail offering me the whole lot for $50.
These hens are not worth $10 each.
Finally if your into show you expect more for your chickens. I however am not. And there are those who think their birds are worth more than any chicken should sell for. There are those who are crackers when it comes to their birds and I expect they just keep the price high cause they really don't want to sell them.
I've seen silkies at an auction for $2.50 each.
Finally there are those who reply to my ads for specific breeds with offers of some other breed. Why would I want a cochin roo to breed with a Dominique? Which by the way don't seem to be that rare anymore.
