What is it?

I think it is useless to beat a dead horse. Some people are so set in their minds that they will NEVER consider that someone else knows more than they do and learn something that he/she should and do maybe do some research/fact searching. I have had some hatchery birds that are nice and I have seen some that are poor examples. Possibly from so much inbreeding. They don't outbreed except to produce the birds they state are crosses and those crosses are produced from 2 known but different breeds of chickens and they do list them as those crossbreeds..
Even though you have had some terrible examples of purebred birds and they look nothing like the standard, they are still purebreds.
I for one am not going to try to teach you something you obviously don't want to learn.
I may not know a lot about chickens, but I do know plenty of simple genetics from my degrees in Biology.

The thing is that most people just assume that hatcheries sell pure bred birds and don't want to here that they got taken.
I have and have had hatchery stock and they are ok for what they are, hatchery chickens and none of them come remotely close to what the bird should look like. I have had birds form Murray McMurray, Cackle, Mt. Healthy, Ideal, RidWay, and Meyers and they all were just chickens.

Now most all hatcheries Feather Sex there chicks today in fact some will even state if you ask them or do some research on them.

I have learned that most if not all hatcheries feather sex at least 85% of there large fowl chickens.

ETA,
Here is a good link to Sex-Links which includes Feather Sexing,
