Choosing the rooster will be harder though, as they will continue the "lines" of your flock. Gamefowl will probably not be a good idea, due to being worser layers.

I'm not familiar with jungle fowl at all, but I wouldn't be confident in the meat aspect? But again, I'm unsure.

I mainly cross breed my birds, have tons of barnyard mixes and the results have been wonderful.

What’s your favorite mix? Anything close to what I am describing?

I just looked up some 9 for gardening, the stares are actually all quite warm most of the year

If you start off with a large flock (20) I would say to go with EEs, australorps, marans, aka. the "middle breeds". Out of 20, one will definitely go broody and the others will be the layers. If you want the rooster to be fierce and protective, keep in mind that he may be aggressive to you as well.

I like this approach. EEs again are great all purpose. Australorp for the extra likeable traits.

May I also recommend looking at a Freedom Ranger/RIR/ or even a type of Game styled bird like the Asil? (For the roosters)

EEs. Not something you are describing. Jungle fowl may be good at being wild. @MysteryChicken has a jungle fowl mix.

You may be fine, but you would want to be able to check on them to make sure they are getting adequate food and be prepared to supplement their forage year round. If their crops are full when they go to roost at night, then they’re getting enough to eat.

I have zero experience with jungle fowl, but many heritage breed roosters are great flock protectors, while also being meaty and good foragers.
