Southern states are alot different. But australorp still a good choice stick by leghorns others can get tossed out thought you were more to the north that I listed. Type zone 9 was not that when the Google was there misread.

Louisiana
Please elaborate more.

The chickens will not have a coop?
No commercial feed?

If so, I believe you are looking at the wrong breeds. The breeds that have been most commonly mentioned are domesticated, really domesticated. A bear, mountain lion, bobcat, dog, can kill for sport. 20 birds will go down...really fast.

Chickens cannot live without certain vitamins though. Are you going to feed a commercial feed? If not, you may want to own something...more wild. Like jungle fowl, which may not meet the meat size.
the goal is to bot feed them anything I purchase. That’s why jungle fowl crosses seem to be necessary.
I’ll have to experiment with crosses in order to achieve my perfect bird. I think it will be a fun class for my kids to be homeschooled on.

This is a very good point.

Like Hawaii?? What predators do you have? Will you provide roosts? Or will they roost in trees?

50 acres...so you want to go on egg hunts every morning? And are you looking into butchering for meat?

I plan to have a coop for the chickens that they come in at night... mainly so I can collect eggs as I please. Other than that totally hands off. Maybe heat lamps in coop for cold nights but probably unnecessary.
This is my endgame though. I probably will not start the flock this way... once their numbers increase and I can observe food selection and health I will add less and less commercial feed.

Okay...well...l have never done something like that, so I honestly have no idea what will happen.
