I am fairly new at this, but I would like to make sure I do what is best for my flock. I read past forums and it gets pretty confusing. I have a flock of four comets currently, with four more comets on their way in the next couple weeks. I thought my girls might enjoy a man around the house. Don't they all? Just what type of cockrel sould they breed with?

Thank you so much. That will allow me also, to get peeps that will lay like the comets? We picked them for my children to learn responsibility, and we just love their eggs and personality. Couldn't be happier, just want to make sure we are not going to create "mutts" we will be discouraged with. Looks not so much as laying.

Since you don't have to worry about sticking with a certain breed, you can pick a roo that is sweet and mellow, so you and your children can learn the joys of rooster ownership! Lucky you!!!!! Let us know what you decide.

If you get a rooster from a breed that is more likely to go broody, you may be ale to get the offspring to do so. Cross-breed birds are some of the best--they seem to inherit the best traits from each breed, IMO.

If you live anywhere near Alabama, I have some extra Buckeye cockerels-- big mahogany bay/ red roosters. You are welcome to have one. Very nice breed, will hunt mice, protect the hens well, make unusual noises, even occasionally a roar. All the ones I have at this time were hen hatched & raised outdoors from day 1 by the mother hen so they are predator savvy as well (a bit more flighty than usual). All their mothers and aunts went broody, some more than once.
