What Is The Best Egg Laying Breed?

Decisions, decisions, when in doubt get 'em all. Just kidding. Sometimes it's good to get a variety of breeds and let them mature before picking favorites - then rehome the others.

So where do you get Leghorn Chickens or rhode Island Reds? Is it to late to start these breeds now? How long before the baby chicks can be out in the coop?

You can find those breeds at most hatcheries and some farm stores. It is a little late in the year to start a flock of chicks whom you want eggs from. (They won't lay till September or October. ) Chicks can go out to the coop once they are COMPLETELY feathered. (So around 7-10 weeks old. )

Thanks for all the replies!!! Now does anyone know where I can get the chickens from? Good sites or local farms in MD?

Does anyone know of anyone getting rid of chickens they got for Easter or deciding to get out of raising chickens?

Do they come back?  How far is far?

Well chickens, obviously, aren't like other flying birds. The farthest a chickens has ever flew was only 301 feet! It all depends on the breed of chicken. When a chicken breed is labeled as flighty it means that they should be confined wih a high fence so they can't fly out and escape.

Since chickens are creatures of routine and habit then, as long as they can, they should come back to the same place every night.
