X2 on wood chips. The only maintenance I have to do is to turn it over with a rake every once in a while. Once a year, the wood chips/chicken poop break down into nice rich soil that I put in the garden beds. If you check Craigslist, you can usually find it free from landscaping companies, or people that ordered to much. If not, it costs about $25 for a cubic yard from any mulch company. Make sure to use wood chips, and not mulch. The wood chips are larger and take longer to break down. It drains well and the chickens love scratching in it.
