what is the best thing to bait a trap for coons

Yuck---------I would not want to eat cat either!! Not sure if I could get raccoon down if I knew what it was. One of the mechanics where I work brought in groundhog for lunch----the other mechanic said it stunk really bad when the guy heated it up----------blech!!!!!

Only racoon I ever caught in a trap was when I used fishy cat food as bait. Only problem was I had to catch all 7 cats and put them up.

Was wondering if one could use eggs as bait for a racoon????? Have plenty of them around.

Little late on this thread but rest assured the coon(s) will be back. If you haven't disposed of the remains of your chickens then they make perfect bait for steel traps or live type(Hava-hart) traps. 'Coons are easy to catch in either type of trap. Sardines or can cat food are a sure thing also. Hope you get 'em!

I use non fetrtile eggs from the incubator , or any raw egg, only catch coons,possum,and skunks, never a cat. Most those other baits will catch cats. Hard to catch a predator with a cat in the trap, plus don't have to worry about bait going bad for a month.

my in-laws just caught a few raccoons this summer. They tried a few things and theirs like marshmallows the best.

I used to catch sooo many raccoons and possum that ate our grain and chickens. They liked horse grain and cat food. I think I tried the peanut butter too. Sometimes though they are just curious enough to walk in when there is nothing there! Make sure to put it in their path no matter what you put in it though. Like if you know where they are getting into your coop put the trap right in front of that part.

YEP , just goes to show about anything will work as bait for raccoons.

Dry cat food has been my best bet.

I've tried sardines and tuna and wet cat food and didn't catch anything, plus they stink and spoil in the heat, and attacted ants from all corners of the planet.

I buy a cheap bag of Special Kitty just for trapping, and honestly I've not caught a stray cat out in the sticks, though I did in my backyard. The cats that got trapped & released never came back for round two, so after the first week or so of trapping I didn't have kitty catching problems anymore.

Cat food and sardines work the best at catching raccoons, unfortunately it'll catch ecery cat in the neighborhood. If cats are a problem I use marshmallows. I saw on another post someone suggested molasses well that's the #1 ingredient in marshmallows. Cats don't seem to care for the marshmallows.
