What is the best type of bird for an inside pet for a child?

Quote:
Some parakeets do talk, some have a mumble that you have to learn to hear, some don't. It depends on the bird and often how much it is talked to, read to and interacted with. Parakeets are good starter hookbills. We had both parakeets and cockatiels.

They should have as HUGE big broad and gigantic a cage as you can fit and afford(small bar spacing), not them tiny darn things they pretend a bird needs or do as we did, allow it flight in the house. They're flighted, a cage should ideally allow flight. Like your home should allow walking... and you not be confined legless to one room.

Cockatiels are also not bad for a ten year old and they will also talk, ours called our daughter when he heard the bus pull up from school and when she was outside and he loved to get on the ground and talk to feet in socks. He ate dinner with us, buzzing and chattering his way through his veggies and pasta and beans.

We have finches, and while they aren't "pets", so to speak, they are happy and chippy and sweet as can be. Try oasisbirds.com or oasisaviary.com, not sure which, but its located in Mascoutah, Illinois and they sell stuff cheap and even have layaway, which is where I got the finches for $5 each, and wonderful people. They breed and hand train them there, and our little group was healthy and happy as could be. Parakeets are darling, they are so funny. I had one that did the wolf whistle no matter WHO was in their bathing suit, and then he would say, "dig that girl" after he whistled. My grandmother had a friend who had one for years, and at mealtime, he would perch on her shoulder, bow his little head and "mumble" a prayer with her. Such a precious picture that no one took!! Love Birds are beautiful and relatively inexpensive, and friendly. Love Cockatiels, never had one, but its on the list. My cousin had one and she was a mess . . .spoiled rotten. There was one for sale at a local pet store a few years ago, her "parents" were getting a divorce and no one wanted her as a result, so she was for sale. She would literally lay in your arms like a baby . . .amazing bird. She was $1500, or I would have had her in a heartbeat. Good luck with your quest!!!!

Parakeets definitely talk! LOL They also mimic other house sounds. We had one that would laugh, bark, he was a riot.
