Hi all, I'm new to raising Chickens so please excuse my ignorance. What does the egg song sound like? I have heard it mentioned here and am wondering what it is. My Buff Orpingtons are approx. 18 weeks old so I am waiting for them to start laying eggs any week now. Thanks for any reply.

It's basically a whole lot of racket that a hen makes to announce to the world that she laid an egg. Not one of mine does it though.

I suggest saying the following out loud for the full effect.

BOK-BOK-BA-GAWWWWWKKK!!!! (An egg! An egg! I laid an egg!)
Bok-a-bok-a-bok-a- GAWK! (There's an egg... COMING!)
I hear the first one a lot more. They can be loud, too. They want the WHOLE world to know!

Thanks Maggierae thats the sound I have been hearing for the last couple days. This is a new sound, I guess I better start looking around, as I let my 6 hens free range for a couple of hours a day! What time of day do they usually lay their eggs?

That's it. Not really a song. lol!

In the coop it's not so bad, but sometimes it starts others in the run off.

So it is rapidly followed by an imp SSSSSHHHHHing out the bedroom window at 6am, to no avail.

Then followed by a stumbling half-dressed imp racing out across the backyard to open the run. That usually quiets the ones in the run.

Imp- has tolerant neighbors

Sometimes it's the other hens "singing for joy" for the hen that is laying.

My RIR's sing and sing and sing when one of the other hens is laying .... ok... "singing" implies a nicer sound than what I hear. By golly, it is a racket and a half!! And the whole neighborhood knows ... there is no doubting that something Big is happening.
