What would you say the friendliest duck breed is? I wanted Wood Ducks and Mandarins, but they are ornamental and arent as docile. Also they are Pricey I was going to buy some but it ended up at 250 dollars!

So I guess I got to go lower, I want a nice bird that I get some eggs from. Any suggestions of breed and pics are always welcomed!

Handled often from a very young age- any duck can be extremely friendly- regardless of breed- it is more the temprement and personality of the individual bird. Runners tend to be hapier in numbers of 5 of more, Pekins are one of the most popular mainly because of the availability. Cayugas- Welsh Harlequins and Appleyards are very pretty and good natured. Kahki Campbells are great egg layers- ( as are Runners) They all have their good points- Choose a breed you can afford and like the look of - Set up a brooder and adult pens - then go get your ducklings and spend lots of time with them- handling is the key to having tamer ducks.

I only know of Australian Wood ducks- Which are extremely hard to raise - as the population here is virtually all wild.

I would think that theirs way to big of a size differance between the two. If you breed any other kind of duck to a moscovy you get whats called a mule and it can't reprodouce.

Muscovies are huge ducks. My big drake weighs 12 and 1/2 lbs. Aren't wood ducks little tiny ducks?

The two breeds are totally difference in size- A muscovy drake could do some serious harm to a female wood duck if there were attempted matings.

Everyone always says that moscovies are the friendlest breed of duck out there but it really depends on how it was raised, like duckyfromoz said. I had a trio of moscovies and they were some of the wildest ducks I'd ever had! Bacause they were raised without human contact.
