I bet $10 its those depluming mites...andnot MOLTING.... causeher feather loss is just mostly on her belly....I have been reading on here for days and printed out stuff . I go out in that (dang(crevices galore coop) and look with flashlight...
I even asked Hubby redo the roost and poop bd. to make it freestanding away from the walls
Valzabaned all of them recently too....No way will I use SEvin.. Threw away long time ago what I had > ....hate even using Poultry dust.....
I am concerned going to lose my 1 and 1/2 year old Baby Girl.. she is or was the dominant hen. She stays by herself mostly. slow etc cries or whines. she has lost so much weight. she acts like shes 90 yr old..barely eats... wont fight for treats like she used t.....
Give probiotics and vitamins electrollytes.. etc every other day sometimes every day with the hot weather,,
tell me how in the heck you even apply anything to a full feathered chicken?? with all those feathers....??? directions for most stuff say to work a product onto and down to their skin.....
Her BELLY and top of thighs are red. Hubby unfortunately put that dang Blue Kote on her belly etc... It makes it hard to see the color of her skin... I bet its NOT molting. I soaked her the other day in Melafix(as per another BYC uses) and warm water even added a little food grade sulphur... she did not seem to mind it much. Course she runs away when I get near her. I guess she scared will keep her inside again or give shot or medicate etc... She also hates it when come in coop at night with vaseline and soft paintbrush for their legs..
Wild birds have gotten in the coops and runs so often have to put up a "screen curtain over their kennel gate....
ALSO most of them avoid the old coop they lay their eggs in the little cedar tractor coop...
wild birds also hang in the trees in their giant 1/2 acre... Plus like I mentioned on here before. A bird swept down and took a peanut recently out of one of my 6 month old Barr rockers beak. They are so brazen...
also my old set of chickens had scaley legs....
Cleaned completely coop weeks ago replaced with new bedding... sprayed Permithin while back took blower and blew in "Poultry Dust" like dawg 53 said he did...
Rub Vaseline on roost also with pure sulfur...
I am concerned all of them will or have it in the to diff coops....
Please help save my chickens...Now Pinkie Girl( 7 month old one) is avoiding stuff and hangs by herself....
thanks

When dealing with depluming mites it is useless to look for them with a flashlight. They are micro or near microscopic in size. They also spend all their life on the host bird, often out of sight inside the feather or its folical. While there are mite species that live in the coop and come out at night to feed on your birds, depluming mites is not one of these species.

To treat the roost and coop for the red mite species, mix Permethrin and old or used motor oil and paint the roost poles well with this concoxion. A little Permethrin mixed in with your Vasoline kills scaley leg mites quickly. When treating your birds for mites treat every chicken, this delays re-infestations.

To treat a fully feathered chicken, dipping it in an insectcide laced tank of water always worked for me.
