What is the most effective cough medicine (for adults) on the market?

this is a bit late, but I have good luck with a strong tea made of fresh ginger root, lemon juice, and honey. Steep about a pinky nail sized chunk, minced, in boiled water about 5 minutes, strain. Add juice 1/2 lemon, then lots of honey to taste when its cooled a bit.

It's possible your cough could be due to allergies, rhinitis (allergic or non allergic), or that you could be developing a serious infection, or even 'coughing asthma'(some people with asthma never wheeze, they just cough).

Please, instead of trying to find a stronger cough medicine, see a doctor, especially if this persists.

For a short term aid, please try to humidify your house if it's too dry due to having the heat on in winter, drink a lot of water (doctors say, 'The best expectorant is water').

Many times, efforts to suppress a cough make the cough worse - and thicken secretions making it harder to cough up the irritation.

As far as I know, there is only one OTC cough suppressant available, dextromethorphan. It is what is in Robitussin DM as well as Delsym and the (expensive) newer Mucinex cough products. It is also available in generic for a whole lot less.

Probably the home remedies work about as well.

I use something my grand mother used I love it and found it works better then anything else prescription or not. Its creamolsion (sp) my bottle is upstairs and DH is sleeping from working last night I will get it and check the spelling its been around since the early 1900's and I love the stuff there is only one store that carries it now.
