Sorry, couldn't resist.

most of my EEs are pretty quiet.. and thinking about it.. i dont think i have heard my maran hens make much noise at all..
my loudest hen is a mixed breed "columbian" colored somthing??? she talks and talks

henmama..
that CHICKEN is quiet, but when humans get around it there is all kinda of noise!!!! gobble, munch, cruch, lick, smack.... ssssslluuuurrrppp.. *BURP*

I have a Welsummer hen who is very quiet, and my two BOs are fairly quiet as well. So is my silver laced Wyandotte, but she is the low hen on the pecking order. I have two EEs, one is pretty loud and a busybody, the other rarely speaks, but then she has a fairly severely twisted beak. The real Chatty Cathy of the flock is my cuckoo maran - I can hear her from the neighbor's yard. I bribe the neighbors with eggs. I think hen volume depends on each flock's dynamics.

Interesting how this running poll across three threads is going. Honestly, I think that it could easily be going, going, gone.

Individual differences will surely turn up a noisy hen in every breed, I think. And probably, flock dynamics what they are, there is probably a bird assigned the job of making noise or keeping quiet based on pecking order as much as temperament.

Until the vote against the Cuckoo Marans they were up to 3 votes as a quiet breed and running nearly abreast the Orpington. However, if we continue to allow a single black ball to disqualify, the Marans are OUT.

Folks with Welsummers have already voted but not one of them declared that they were quiet (or noisy). Keliejc, your Welsummer hen AND your Cuckoo Marans may both be exceptions to the rule. But, I'll include the Welsummer with a single vote for and none against. And by my reckoning, those Buff Orpingtons get another vote as Quiet Hens (with no votes as noisy):

Welsummer: 1
Cochin: 1
Andalusian: 1
Light Brahma: 1
Dorking: 1

Orpington: 5 votes for and none against

Now, I'm going to stop tallying these votes because I'm all but certain that they are going to get bumped off one after another. But, it is interesting to note how long the Marans lasted and how well the Orpingtons finished.

I have one austrolorp and she's very quiet. And docile. I have a golden campine that's incredibly loud. Barred rock and brown leghorn are somewhere in between.

my andelusians are kinda quiet UNLESS you try to handle them,, then they are XTRA loud screaming like you are killing them.. and very flighty, will squak and scream trying to avoid your grasp...

my blue cochins are VERY quiet,, even when catching and holding them,, very quiet.. even the rooster doesnt crow hardly at all (compared to my other roosters)

One of my BRs was just out there bawking up a storm to one of the other pullets to "get off the nest"!! I went outside to bring her in for a few minutes to quiet her down. Living where I do, with neighbors right next to you, I don't need any "attention" if you know what I mean?
