Why keep em? Because they are feathered two year olds that delight me with their antics and personality.
I have had chickens for about five years now. My four remaining 5 year old brahma hens hold a special place in my heart and always will. My younger flock of brahmas provide us with eggs, since my husband won't eat duck eggs in anything but baked goods. I have a favorite in the younger flock, a chicken that prefers the company of humans to other chickens, but the rest are just egg layers to me. I also have a flock of three, two seramas and a special needs silkie X. The seramas are kept as company for my special needs hen, who is also a favorite.
I have a small flock of runner ducks, a drake and five hens. Cute, funny and good at insect control. I also have a pair of call ducks. Alot of my friends have calls and I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. I love them and hubby adores them. Not good for much other than the laughter they bring us.
My geese? O-M-Gee, they are by far THE best feathered pets. My pair started imprinting on me from the moment I opened their shipping box. My goose Lucy especially likes to get into mischief and keeps me on my toes. My gander Tuffy is a mama's boy and even though Lucy is laying now and gearing up towards sitting, Tuffy is still a good boy. I got a hiss out of him when I went to let them out of their coop the day Lucy laid her very first egg; that's it. He'd like to kill our german shepherds, but has enough sense not to do more than posture. I fully anticipate Tuffy to get a bit more aggressive when Lucy settles in to brooding and raising goslings, but I'm prepared for it. Given the choice of being flogged by a gander or spurred by a rooster, I'll take the gander, tyvm.
Did I mention that we didn't have to mow our fenced yard of nearly an acre even once this past summer?
