Atwoods, TSC, Rural King or any other Big Box rural lifestyle retail store is still just re-selling shipped in, bagged feed.

They all are OK in a pinch, and with a sale or coupon, but....... In the long run, a local feed mill, that has ready access to local grains, grinds their own and sells direct will almost always save the consumer $5-$10 per hundred. Our "local" feed mills are both 40-50 miles away in opposite directions. But, so are many things.

Most of us don't have a sports stadium, an IKEA, or other things within a mile of the house either. But when life takes us that way, we go. Same with a quality feed mill.

Will tell you in a few minutes what we are paying today. Time to run to the feed store AGAIN!

Did anyone notice this thread was in teh BYC newsletter? Guess we have a lot of folks watching it. Sort of takes the sting out of feed prices by having fun comparing the prices.

My last purchase:

50#grit 9.95
50#oyster 11.95
50#wheat 14.34
50#scratch 15.55
50#flaked barley 16.75
50#org lay pell 22.75
10# wh corn 5.00
8# peanut 7.00
50#fishmeal 48.75
tax 9.12

The fishmeal will last 4 months. Nutribalancer runs me about $50 for a 50# bag, but only becauswe I have to have it shipped. That lasts about a year though.

The farmer (Howard Stack) down the road makes his own blend by adding soybeans and supplements to his corn. Layer is $10 for 50# and grower is $11.50. It's worth the 30 minute drive to get freshly ground.
