What is this and can chickens eat it?

I think I might try the boiling water first and then if that doesn't work try digging?

How do you do the water thing? Just boil a bunch and pour it on there?

The trees are pretty big pines so I think they should survive?
 
They are sort of tubers, the boiling water will not kill it. Might injure it.
I would fence around it. My hens don't like the area mine is in, the plants prefer shade, my hens like open areas. I have a section of what used to be animal fencing around tree bases that I lay over the LOV when they free range, just in case. Like a bubble. Maybe something like that ?
 
The problem is they like to fly there from the coop but I guess it won't hurt them to do a little extra work and go around. :p

If I had toxic plants to get rid of, I'd torch them with my propane torch, being careful not to breathe the smoke. Or dig it up and burn it....
Good luck w this...on the positive side, they've not eaten any so far
